Smart SlateHello. I am a student teacher and enjoying my career change to education. My cooperating teacher uses a Smart Slate. During Power Point presentations, it allows me to walk around the room and be engaged with the students as opposed to being stuck behind the desk. It is a wireless device and is very effective. The principal at the school explained to me that if my feet had paint on the bottom, he should see footprints all over the room during a lesson. This technology certainly helps with this theory!

Simple sites with boundless opportunities-GoogleA lot of times we are thinking about grand programs that concentrate on specific areas. Two Google programs that can open up creativity are Google images and Google Earth. Doing a unit on Monarch butterfly migration? Get images from Google images and let students follow the migration path on G. Earth. They get to see the landforms in almost real time. Makes things become real instead of just pics in a textbook.

Yahoo education groupsThis site has lots of traffic. There are some excellent sites recommended by other teachers. There are the occasional sales pitches, but overall a great way to find ways to use tech in the classroom. You do need to sign up, but it is painless. Elementary-Lesson-Share@yahoogroups.com

Underground Railroad at Scholastic.comHere is a wonderful example of how technology can be integrated. Use an interactive board of some kind to display the Underground Railroad unit for your class. The graphics are great, there are primary sources sprinkled across the unit for students to explore, and there is valuable audio support everywhere. http://teacher.scholastic.com/...

Hardest part of technologyWhat's the hardest part for you in integrating technology? Is it the actual hardware - setting up the computers, connecting to the internet, etc. or is it developing real uses for the technology in the lesson?
-
Re: Hardest part of technologyI keep a bunch of word documents open for all my teaching thoughts, tech integration being one of them. When I have an idea, problem, or solution I put it into the doc before I forget and then review when I have time. This way I keep up with what has worked or not worked in the past, and reminds me of what I want to try in the future.
-
Re: Hardest part of technologyOne of my challenges with technology integration can be tracking your material. Because of the flexibility in technology, it can be difficult to maintain a curriculum map of the skills you will teach. How do you develop a technology curriculum?

Testers and feedback neededHi all, I am a teacher in the UK and have picked up a couple of national awards here for a games-based learning system I have created with a friend. I have set up accounts for US students but would really love some feedback and guidance on how it could be made more suitable for your requirements. It is all non-for profit (free to access and free of ads). Details of it can be found at http://www.what2learn.com/top-... I know it is a bit cheeky to ask but it is becoming a big hit here and I wondered how useful it would be your side of the pond.
-
Re: Testers and feedback neededThis is a great forum John! I am interested in ideas for a learning asset using authoring tools. Any ideas fellow technology educators? Judi Florida, USA

-
Re: Testers and feedback neededYes - totally free for teachers and students to access everything the site has to offer (thousands of learning games, game generators, progress reports, in-built rewards, etc). It is also totally free of all adverts. The project is self-funded which is why, with a huge amount of time and a fair bit of money put into it, I am really keen to get some feedback.

To what extent do you use social media in your classroom with students? What social media do you use (either in the classroom or personally)?
-
I think a lot of social networking sites are blocked. I know that my husband just got access to YouTube in his classroom and he's thrilled.
-
Social media sites are blocked at my school, but I have set up a Twitter account to post classroom updates. I don't allow others to comment though. :/
-
Good question! I am not currently teaching in a classroom so I won't answer, but I'll add another question to what you have already posted. What are the difficulties of getting kids to use social media responsibly?
-
-
I love my projector and document camera. My second graders keep focused and I can display video from youtube and our math series via my laptop to go with my lessons.
-
-
You may be surprised at my answer, but the one technology component that has actually made my classroom a better place is an audio enhancer. I have speakers in my classroom, and wear a microphone disk around my neck. What a difference it has made! I am not exhausted from speaking above the hum of 15 computers in my room.

We pop it up on the SmartBoard when we read articles about different countries. My students really have no mental map yet, so this helps them understand location better.
-
I use Google Earth to help track hurricane locations and paths with my fifth grade classes. This lesson works well in September and October - during hurricane season. First, we find exact the latitude and longitude locations for a hurricane and plot them using the pin tool. Then we track the hurricane and note when it increases or decreases in strength. Finally, we make a path to track the miles that a hurricane has traveled. The kids really enjoy it!
-
Thanks, Ashley. I really love how you use Google Earth. Anyone else use Google Earth in a different way?
