Thanksgiving

Did you know that President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed Thanksgiving in 1939 to the second-to-last Thursday in November in order to have a longer Christmas shopping season? He changed it back in 1941. Let's talk all things Turkey!

    Thanksgiving Truths
    wiseguys1
I know that today is the last school day for many teachers, and many already had the week off but I am going to post anyway. :-) My school district has been involved in Beyond Diversity training in which we are taking a look at the curriculum and the way we teach in school. After taking this training I have been digging a little deeper with many topics that I teach. One of them being the history behind Thanksgiving. It is hard to comprehend the truths that I have found when conducting some research on the internet, through books, and other sources, especially after my elementary school teachers ingrained the image of the Pilgrims and Native Americans getting along so peacefully. If anyone wants to know more of what happened to the Wampanoag Indians less than 60 years after the first encounter with the Pilgrims, I encourage you to type in "King Philip's War" or "Metacomet" into a google search and read more. Metacomet (King Philip) was Massasoit's son,who was one of the first Native Americans that came in contact with the Pilgrims. I am not going to share on this board what I found, I would rather have you read it for yourself. Now, when I do teach about the Pilgrims, Native Americans, and the truths I found I do not get into graphic detail, but I try to give my students the picture that not everything was peaceful after they had their first few encounters. I think it is important for kids to know what actually happened in the years following their first few encounters.

Thank you! It is so true that we gloss over the true history especially since we teach Thanksgiving in the younger grades. I urge anyone who has a good lesson plan on teaching a more realistic view of Thanksgiving, please share!

    Mayflower and Pilgrims Webquest/resources(grades 4-8)
    Gail Hennessey
The Mayflower was named after a flower called the "Trailing Arbuttus". This flower is an evergreen with a white flower and pink center. Learn more about the Mayflower and the Pilgrims with this fun cyberhunt. I've also listed lots of resources for teachers to use with their students and also posted a story of a time traveling substitute teacher that takes her students back in time to the first Thanksgiving called Mrs. Portulaca Purpilopilis and the Purple Adventure Goggles (The First Thanksgiving) Maybe, you will find the materials of interest to use in your classroom.
