3.9.F. The student use a variety of strategies to comprehend selections read aloud and selections read independently. The student is expected to: make and explain inferences from text such as determining causes and effects.
The student will make inferences of selections read aloud by using cause and effect.
The student will be able to identify cause and effect elements.
1. The focus will start the lesson; a small video clip that relates to the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff will be presented. The instructor will then ask “what if” questions to establish background knowledge as well as spark the learning process. (2-3 minutes)
2. A PowerPoint presentation will be introduced with the definitions of cause and effect, the objective, and clues to identify cause and effect relationships. (10 minutes)
3. The book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff will be read as the instructor points out cause and effect relationships. (5-7 minutes)
4. Sentence strips will be handed to every group to work as they match them according to the events from the book as they look for cause and effect relationships. (5-10 minutes)
5. The instructor will then close the lesson by guiding the students as they summarize the lesson on cause and effect as they point out the clues. (2-3 minutes)
Special needs learners will be assisted and be given more time to complete the task.
For second language learners the lesson will consist of the picture book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff, and it will be read aloud to the students.
Students who cannot see the board will be accommodated in other seats.
With accommodations this lesson can be extended from 20 minutes to 45 minutes.
The students will be assessed informally as they work on matching sentence strips. The sentence strips will be mismatched and the students will arrange them according to cause and effect relationships from situated settings in the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff.
