Summary:
These are pictures I took when we visited Williamsburg and Jamestown on summer vacation. You will have to narrate, but pictures are self explanatory
Materials:
- To show the students how the first American settlers lived
Resource Instructions
I use the KWL strategy to ask the children "how do you think the first settlers lived?" What kind of clothes did they wear? How did they travel from place to place? What did they eat? What kind of houses do you think they lived in. We draw pictures of "the first settlement" to show what they think they know about the topic. (They are quite funny! Have you ever seen a picture of Pocohantas riding a bicycle??)
Assessment:
To assess their understanding of how the early settlers lived, I have them draw a second picture and compare it to the first. Then I give a written test.
