Summary:
Easy way to teach which number go together in families or groups. Group the number together and teaching the addition and subtraction together.
Materials:
- Card stock and a marker
Goals:
- To teach children addition and subtraction through the use of number groups rather than teaching them addition and subtraction seperately.
Resource Instructions
When children are learning addition and subtraction do them in number groups. For instance, when teaching 2 + 3 = 5 all combinations of the numbers would be taught in the same lesson.
5 - 2 = 3
5 - 3 = 2
2 + 3= 5
3 + 2 = 5
This gives the numbers and the facts more of vallue than they would normally. It teaches that these number gotogether and helps children to learn their math facts more quickly by associating them in groups.
Extensions:
You can either make 4 flash cards for each set, or make triangles with one numb er in each corner to show the group. It is also helpful to have the students make their own flash cards of tirangles.
Assessment:
Assessment can be done by going through the flash cards, give students oral quizzes or written worksheets.
