Introduce the 4 step plan for solving word problems
READ EACH PROBLEM 2 Times
Step # 1 UNDERSTAND: ask "What do you know?" and "What do you need to know?"
Step #2 PLAN: "What operation do we us? (+.-,X, or divide), make a table, draw a picture, compare or contrast
Step # 3 SOLVE: Solve the problem using the chosen plan
Step # 4 CHECK: reread the problem, Does it make sense when you plug in your answer?
Extensions:
Practice using word problems given from your own teaching sources.
Assessment:
Make-up a few problems using your students names within the problem. Use released questions, or use mathematics edition from your own school to create test. A test can also be generated through on-line resources.
