Materials:

  • Math text book (or equivalent fraction work sheet)
  • 4 peanut butter sandwiches
  • Plastic Knife for cutting sandwiches

Goals:

Students will understand equivalent fractions.

 

Resource Instructions

- Explain vocab (numerator, denominator, equivalent)

- Discuss ‘equivalent fraction’ concept in basic terms.

- Show whole sandwich.

- Equate whole sandwich to “one whole”.

- Show next sandwich.

- Compare both sandwiches: they are the same.

-Cut second sandwich in half. Discuss how this is “two halves”.

- Compare sandwiches again, “1 whole = 2 halves”.

- Repeat for sandwich #3 (fourths) and sandwich (eighths).

- Check for understanding.

- Now repeat process comparing ½, 2/4, 4/8

- Check for understanding.

- Finally, show ¼ = 2/8.

- Now assign class work from book or worksheet.

- Assess students as you wander around the room.

- Reteach as needed.

- Assign HW.
