Make a model of a working muscle tendon... the kids will love this!
- Clay (separated into two wads with one bigger than the other)
- 2 paper clips
- Teach kids about how muscles and tendons work together
- Create a model
Take the straw and cut a little slit in the middle -- where you want the straw to bend. Bend the straw away from the slit, the part of the straw that isn't cut should act like a hinge.
Next, press either end of the straw in the wads of clay. (The slit should be facing down so that the straw will bend upwards.) Make sure that the smaller wad is pretty small, otherwise it will be so heavy it will make your model fall over. :(
Now press the two paper clips into clay -- one in each wad. Have them facing eachother.
Tie one end of the yarn to the paper clip in the smaller wad of clay. Thread the other end of the yarn through the larger wad of clay.
Now you are all set up!
For your demonstration, gently pull on the string. This should make the smaller wad of clay lift like someone lifting their arm.
Note to children that tendons pull, they don't push.
