Materials:

  • Simply print off the category board and cards. Precut the cards prior to the lesson. You can make a set for each individual, partners, or small groups. You can also copy the materials onto cardstock, store in envelopes, and use year after year.

Goals:

  • Students categorize sentences into four categories: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative.

Assessment:

Use this activity as an assessment. Go around the room and check each students category board before they put it away. Take a grade on the percentage of sentences categorized correctly. There are 40 sentences; 10 in each category. This file includes an answer key.
